Peer advocates supporting older people affected by cancer

An Excellent Training Day

compassion in dying

On Tuesday 14th May we held a training day for Advocates from Gateshead Cancer Advocacy entitled Your Choice? facilitated by Lesley Hall from the national charity, Compassion in Dying. It became very apparent that the topics discussed were grey areas to the majority of us.

We looked in depth at Advance Decisions and Lasting Power of Attorney and how they could assist an older person living with cancer to articulate their needs, wants and wishes.

Statistics show that less than 5% of older people have actually had these documents completed. The training therefore flagged up the importance of advocates assisting older people with cancer to find out and consider making their end of life views known.

Everyone present felt that Lesley’s training was inspiring and she brought a wealth of experience, answering the many and varied questions everybody asked. The knowledge gained will undoubtedly be passed on to older people affected by cancer using our service.

Thanks to Lesley for this excellent training opportunity

  2. Reblogged this on end-of-life rights advocacy and commented:
We are delighted to have the opportunity to support OPAAL and their Silver Dreams project, and it is great to get feedback on the impact Lesley and her training is having. We look forward to doing more together in the future.
