Affected by cancer A new service has been launched in Gateshead for residents over 50 suffering from cancer. Gateshead Cancer Advocacy is an Age UK Gateshead service that aims to empower people to make informed decisions and choices about their treatment and care.
Funded by the Older People’s Advocacy Alliance, Big Lottery Silver Dreams Fund and Macmillan Cancer Support, trained volunteers can help with practical queries like transport to hospital appointments, sit in on those difficult appointments, provide information on local agency services, or just lend a friendly, listening ear.
Alan Davison, Advocacy Co-ordinator, said: “Unfortunately cancer affects so may people both directly and indirectly, and it may feel like there is no one turn to. “Our free service is completely confidential and is a great way to access support at a highly emotive time.”
